If you grew up in and around New York City then you are sure to remember your trip to Old Bethpage Village. There is no need to travel to Colonial Williamsburg to see rein-actors dress up in costume and drink birch beer while doing historical crafts, just travel 40 minutes out on the LIE for some good old fashioned fun. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a living history museum depicting farm and town life on Long Island in the mid-19th century. There are 51 historic buildings and seven reconstructions, and the site encompasses 209 acres. Bethpage is staffed by costumed guides and crafts persons who will help make this a memorable visit. Read on for details.
From spring through December, Old Bethpage recreates the atmosphere of a pre-Civil War Long Island Village, illustrating farming, crafts and activities through the actual practice of their skills. On over 200 acres of rolling hills are the settings for costumed interpreters to portray farmers, teachers, storekeepers, blacksmiths, civic leaders, and the others who made up a community of the mid-1800s.
Old Bethpage features special seasonal activities, such as an 1880’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration in March, Sheep Shearing in May, Civil War Battle in July, and the Fall Harvest in September, the month of the Long Island Fair. As well as being a wonderful place for a family outing, kids are encouraged to try their hand at activities such as writing on a slate board at the Schoolhouse, butter churning at the Farmhouse, carding wool, playing 19th century games, and helping in the General Store.
