Two New Playgrounds Open In Astoria This Weekend

File1769 On Friday, July 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Athens Square Park
on 30th Street and 30th Avenue in Astoria Queens will cut the ribbon on two new
play parks. After $1.5 million in improvements to the park it will better meet
the needs of the community. One of the features to the new park is a locking
night gate. Given that this area of Astoria has a large Greek population, the
playgrounds were designed to imitate the country and culture. Both playgrounds,
one for tots and the other for children up to 12 years old, feature blue and
orange, to reflect Greece’s famous blue sky and seas while the orange
represents the terracotta roofing that is popular in the country. Olive
branches, fishing boats and sea creatures that are native to Greece are
featured at spray showers. Quotations from Greek philosophers can be found
around the play areas.
