Creators' Co-Op which opened this Wednesday in Astoria NY is a store that sells hand-made unique items that include fashion, accessories, art, and home goods. “For participating artists, it is a co-operative style venue where we introduce ourselves to the public, and sell some of our creations.” Says Kazuki, creator and fellow and Queens Mama. She had been making baby clothes and selling them at street fairs and craft markets, and longed for a permanent store front for her creations. “I want to give the people in my own neighborhood a choice of not taking the subway into Manhattan or Brooklyn to shop for something cool and, I want to share the opportunity of having a permanent venue to my fellow artists.”
She has been curating the artists to join the co-op, based on the quality of their work, style, and taste level. The store opened its doors and looks cute with its red awning and great location on the hip and upcoming 23rd Avenue in Astoria Queens.
The co-op currently has:
There are a few more artists in the process of joining the co op. “I want the store to be full of interesting, great items. “ says Kazuki. She is also hoping to have some demonstrations and classes by the artists in the store.
So what has it been like opening a store as a mama? “It's been interesting having my 2 year old with me as I get the store ready, drilling and painting. Other artists have been understanding and amused. I am creating a small area where she will be hanging out in the store, too. Now she's going to be a shop baby – a small shift from being a street fair baby!”
