Max and Mina’s Homemade Ice Cream

There is a tiny, quirky, and mouthwatering gem hiding in a rundown strip mall in Flushing. If you haven’t been to Max and Minas Homemade Ice Cream, put on your elastic waistband pants and GO! NOW!

This funky little shop is home to more than 5,000 rotating flavors. They range from banana chip to beer, from Tahitian vanilla to horseradish. The walls are covered with stickers and photos and it feels more Santa Cruz than Queens. The delightfully fun and chatty staff will serve you an endless number of samples and trust me, you’ll want to try more than a handful of these yummy and sometimes wacky flavors. We sampled Cookie Mess, strawberry banana, coconut chip and pizza to name a few.

My outstanding favorite was Red Velvet Cake, a rich and creamy base that tastes just like the real thing filled with tons of soft, delicious cake. It seemed as though someone had just mushed a fresh baked slice into my cone. Amazing! I shared a very generous single cone ($2.95) with my two year old and we were both beyond satisfied.

We will, without a doubt, be buzzing across the Grand Central again very soon to see what other crazy concoctions they have in store.

Max and Mina’s is located at 7126 Main Street in Flushing, just off of Jewel Avenue east of Flushing Meadows Park. There is plenty of street parking or the shop can be easily accessed by the Q44 bus. Phone: (718) 793-8629
