Forest Hills residents have given a very warm (and perhaps overwhelming) welcome an authentic French bakery, La Boulangerie, which opened last week. Owner and baker François Danielo and his girlfriend, Nadia, seek to bring the taste and feel of Paris right to lucky patrons between bustling Austin Street and Queens Boulevard.
I went at 9:00 am on opening day and snagged the last croissant along with an iced coffee, both fantastic. I also bought a baguette to enjoy at home. It was crusty on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. In a word: perfect. The selection was very limited that day and I’ve heard the supply has continued to struggle to meet the demand. While disappointing, this speaks to the quality of the product and the enthusiasm of our community!
The current menu is rather limited but is set to include paninis, sandwiches, soups, and salads in addition to baked goods and a full service coffee bar. While hours have been fluctuating over the past week, Nadia say that they will be set to remain open from 7:00am until 8:00pm.
La Boulangerie is an elegant yet simple space, with room to seat about 20 patrons. High chairs and a bookcase filled with children’s books invite the littlest customers to settle right in. The cooler of beverages includes reasonably priced juice and milk boxes. Picture windows offer diners a perfect view of all of the action in the kitchen. My normally restless two year old contentedly sat and nibbled her half of our chocolate croissant while admiring the baker and his skills for at least five minutes. Priceless!!
Two notes to families:
– There are several stairs at the entrance so you will have to lift or drag your stroller.
– There is no public restroom.
La Boulangerie is located at 109-01 72nd Road, Forest Hills. (347) 644-5606
