Currently under construction and expected to open in 2013 is the Rockaways YMCA, a 44,000 square foot facility on 2.2 acres, near Beach 73rd St and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The YMCA will be part of the Arverne-by-the-Sea community, a 2,300 unit residential complex, and will serve as the center of community life for the whole peninsula.
Once open, we can expect a highly visible and multifunctional facility, offering a broad range of changing services. The Rockaways YMCA will contribute to the vitality of the community by serving a wide variety of individuals, groups, and activities through every season.
The two pool aquatic center will be the first “Family Aquatic Center” in the five boroughs, featuring a four-lane lap pool, as well as a warm family pool with zero depth entry, spray and climbing elements as well as a slide. The pools will be showcased through large windows displaying the aquatic complex. This will be the only indoor aquatic center available to the residents of the Rockaway peninsula, offering beach residents a safe place to learn how to swim.
The Rockaways YMCA will also provide the community with space for youth and community activities, outdoor recreation areas and playfields, a large cardiovascular area and two aerobic studios as well as an enclosed gymnasium and recreation rooms.Areas for socializing and multiple all-purpose rooms will host a variety of activities throughout the day and evening. We should expect to see early morning yoga for commuters, mid-morning exercises for seniors, lunchtime exercise programs, after-school youth programs, teen programs and community meetings in the evening.
