The Waldorf School of Garden City stands alone as Long Island’s most unique private school. Waldorf is not only a school but an educational philosophy that is centered around simplicity and creativity especially in the early years of education. This encouragement begins with the Parent and Child classes held on the upper floor of this beautifully constructed facility in Garden City NY.
Unlike a typical “mommy and me” class, the parent and child classes at Waldorf encompass more than just music and free play while parents sit and watch. The school uses strictly natural materials in their classrooms and children are allowed time to play with toys made from wool, wood and other natural fibers. The teacher leads the children in preparing their own snack from scratch teaching the little ones how to churn their own butter and bake bread. All of the food is organic and older children enjoy a salad bar made from the schools sustainable garden.
The parents are also given an opportunity to participate in this class by learning how to knit, do hand crafts, engage in book discussions, and work on projects like healthy meal planning. The classes are small with only 10 children per class and caregivers range from grandparents and dads to moms and other relatives.
The Parent and Child program is designed for children aged 12 months to 3 years old attending with a parent or caregiver. These two-hour classes meet once to twice a week and you can find more about them here.
Waldorf has several open houses coming up this season. One on November 4th and another on December 2nd. Be sure to check them out.
