If you’re still searching for that perfect gift, or you love unique one of a kind items, Queens Mamas has found just what you need. Vaya Bags is a collection of hip accessories unlike any other. Each piece is a handmade creation of designer Tia Meilinger, in Ridgewood, Queens. A former environmental scientist and Long Island native, Tia uses recycled materials to create sturdy, waterproof, functional bags that are still stylish and colorful.
Born out of necessity in 2005, when Tia couldn’t stand having another expensive bag she had just purchased break, she took to her sewing machine with the strongest material she could find. Sailboat awnings, bicycle tubes and seatbelts are just a few of the items given new life in Vaya Bags. The complete line of upcycled products includes messenger bags in a variety of sizes, laptop bags, purses, wallets, backpacks, bike accessories and more.
With multiple pockets and room to carry just about anything you might need, these bags make a great gift. Have a teen or college student on your list? How about a mom or dad looking for an alternative to the typical diaper bag? Each of the bags is customizable and come in a huge selection of colors. You can even have a completely custom bag made to your exact specifications. The designer will work with you to make your ideal bag.
Vaya Bags are made and sold at their Ridgewood store location, but can also be found on their website, in the Queens Museum of Art gift shop, as well as shops in Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, London and Tokyo.
