Free Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Queens

On January 23, you can ring in the Lunar New Year. It’s extra exciting because this time around we’ll be ushering in the Year of the Dragon! Build up excitement by doing a little research and planning some projects. Figure out what your sign is based on the Chinese calendar. Borrow a book from the library. See this posting for a great book suggestion.

There are a number of activities you and your little one can participate in in Queens’ on China Town, Flushing, and other neighborhoods. Many of these events are on the same date so you can make a day of it.

Little Waltzers’ Chinese New Year Party/Sing-a-long

While not free, this event is only $7  for your entire family. Dress in something red and ring in the year of Dragon with dancing and singing. Free Snack Bar for Kids – featuring all Chinese Snacks.

Ridgewood Library Chinese New Year and Craft

    Listen to stories and design crafts in honor of the year of the dragon.

          An expert in origami will teach children to make a dragon.

            Flushing Library Lunar New Year Festival

              Visit the Library at Flushing for cooking classes where you can prepare traditional Korean Lunar New Year foods. Make Chinese Dragons out of dough. After that, enjoy a traditional Korean Dance performance and a Chinese face-changing show.

              Sky View Celebrates 2012 Year of the Dragon

                This newish Flushing shopping mall will be celebrating all afternoon in honor of the Lunar Year. Watch a Lion Dance and Martial Arts. Win the raffle. Then stay for the Fashion Show. Do it all over again, if you want as the program repeats through 5PM.

                      Flushing will be all decked out for their annual parade. Enjoy dragon dancer, steel drummers, and fireworks. Be prepared for huge crowds. This one’s a biggie!

                          Visit the Flushing Town Hall for their Lunar New Year Dance Sampler. Go back on Sunday, February 5th, for Lunar New Year Workshops like puppet making and origami making.
