Friends visiting recently said if they had such amazing food at dirt cheap prices from all over the world at their fingertips, they would eat out for lunch every day. There are so many pubs, restaurants & cafes in Sunnyside that offer great food & atmosphere. It is so hard to know where to go or what to try. Queens Mamas has found some kid friendly places with the best lunch deals in the neighborhood. Many of the restaurants on the list also have Early Bird Dinner Specials that you simply can’t go wrong with!
This place has two separate dining rooms with huge windows to gaze out on busy Queens Blvd., nice decor, great service & a friendly staff. The food is phenomenal so if you have not been, you have to check it out. We have been there several times for lunch & the Early Bird Dinner special & have never been disappointed. They don’t skimp on portions for the specials either!
The lunch special includes a choice of 6 appetizers & an entree for either $6 or $7 depending on what you order. Only three dishes cost $8. For an extra $1 you can add on a Thai iced tea, Thai iced coffee or soda.
Two of our favorite dishes are the Pad Kee Mow with the flat noodles & lots of veggies & the Pad Prik Khing with string beans in the Prik Khing curry. The fried rice options are also great. There is a kid’s set for $8 which includes chicken satay, spring roll & kid fried rice. For $1 more get a cherry temple. You can also order apps for kids as well.
They have an Early Bird Dinner Special (full course meal) which is absolutely the best & a steal. It is $13.99 & includes an appetizer, main course, drink & dessert. There is a wide selection of apps & entrees to choose from. We really love the app Moo Dad Deaw, fried sun dried marinated pork served with Sriracha sauce. Not all Thai places have this & it is yummy! For more info: www.deethainyc.com/

This place is very hip with huge lotus flowers painted on the wall & lovely flower light fixtures. There are huge windows which face Queens Blvd. to watch all the action. During nice weather the windows also slide open for a breeze. The staff & service are both great. It is the perfect place to relax & have a nice lunch. We were there once when it was snowing & the children just watched the snow fall in amazement!
The lunch special includes a choice of 5 appetizers or a drink along with your entree. The $6.00 lunch special includes the following choices for an entree: chicken, beef, pork, mixed vegetables or tofu. The lunch price for seafood & duck is higher, either $7.00 or $9.95.Great options for kids are satae, curry puffs, edamame, steamed dumplings, or even a side order of rice!
The Prix Fixe Dinner Special for $13.95 includes a choice between two soups, a thai salad with light peanut dressing, appetizer-vegetable spring rolls, six choices for the main course & three dessert choices. This place is spacious with two dining rooms & was remodeled a couple of years ago. The look is upscale & the staff is not only friendly but great with the kids as well. We have been going to this place for years & love it.
The lunch special for $8.95 includes an appetizer (dip, soup or salad), an entree (wide selection of kebabs served with white rice or traditional bulgur wheat) & a drink (soda, coffee or tea). We recommend trying the bulgur wheat which is really good. They also have sandwiches for $5.00 w/o an appetizer. The meat selections for these specials include adana (ground lamb), shish (cubed lamb), kofte (meatball), doner (ground lamb), falafel, chicken & chicken adana.
All of the dips here are incredible such as the hummus, babaganush, eggplant with sauce, cacik (yogurt sauce) & lebni (yogurt & cucumber sauce) to name a few. They are served with warm yummy pita bread cut into triangles. The lamachun/pides (Turkish style pizzas) are really yummy! Ground meat or cheese are great ones to try. All of these are great kids’ options as well. For more info: Welcome to Turkish Grill

This is a small cozy place with a friendly staff. There are a variety of lunch specials on the menu for mostly $7 & unlike other sushi spots there are other rolls besides California rolls to choose from. We really like the 2 roll sushi lunch with soup & salad. The bento boxes are a great deal. The chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki & beef negimaki all come with salad, gyoza, miso soup & rice. The chicken is white meat & some of the best we have tried for a lunch special.
They also have a Sushi Happy Hour which gives you 50% off sushi rolls & sushi a la carte Mon- Thurs. 5:30-7:30p.m. In addition there is a Dinner Special Mon.-Thurs. with chicken teriyaki $9.50, salmon teriyaki $10.50 & beef teriyaki $11.50. All three specials include pork gyoza or tempura. For more info: Oki Sushi.

BIooms is a Victorian style pub with class. The owner is very welcoming & friendly & so is the staff. This place is truly a gem in the neighborhood. There is a huge cozy wrap around booth in the front which is great for smaller kids to lounge. Even better, it has a beautiful leafy bamboo walled garden in the back.
The garden is the perfect space to enjoy their $5.00 “Beat the Recession” lunch specials. It is enclosed in the winter & open air in the summer. The special lunch menu includes a choice of Shepherd’s Pie, soup & sandwich, beef sliders & chips, BLT & chips.
There is also a $5 kids menu which includes the following options: mini 4oz. burger with fries, pasta shells with butter or marinara, Irish sausage (3) with fries, & chicken fingers with fries. The $2 kids’ drinks include milk, chocolate milk, shirley temple, oj. For more info visit Molly Blooms.

This recently opened take out pizza place is the buzz in the neighborhood & has all the Moms talking! We had to check it out. We tried the cheese slice which is slightly smaller than an average regular slice, but it is just right for a quick snack or for a kid’s meal. We haven’t heard one bad review yet. Many parents are even ordering pies for birthday parties, at 99 cents a slice you can’t beat it. Get some take out pizza & head to the park. For more info: 99 cent Fresh Pizza.
