NYC Public Schools: Important April Dates and Deadlines

There is always something happening in the world of NYC Schools. We hope that the dates listed below help you keep track!

Choosing the right public school:

On April 3, the District 3 Magnet School Program ( will be presenting a parent workshop to clarify the public school choice process. They’ll present on the many public school options open to families.

When: Tuesday, April 3 from 5PM to 6:30 PM

Where: Joan of Arc Auditorium, 154 West 93rd Street (Between Amsterdam and Columbus), Manhattan

Cost: Free

Charter Schools and Special Education:

On April 4, the Charter Parent Action Network (CPAN) and the NYC Special Education Collaborative will present a half day workshop about the history of Special Education at Charter Schools and the evaluation and referral process. Please RSVP to Dania Reid at or 212-437-8336.

When: Wednesday, April 4 from 9:30AM to 12:30 PM

Where: NYC Charter School Center, 111 Broadway, Suite 604, Manhattan

Universal Pre-K (UPK) Application Deadline:

The UPK application is out for Department of Education (DOE) UPK programs is April 5.  CBO programs may have their own deadlines or rolling admission throughout the year. Don’t forget to check. The directory and applications is available here.


May SAT Registration

Students must register for the May SAT by April 6.


Fifth Annual College Fair:

On April 14, the Queens Library College Fair will host representatives from many different colleges and trade schools. Hear a panel discussion as well as information about financial aid and admissions.

When: Saturday, April 14 from 10AM to 2PM

Where: Langston Hughes Library, 100-01 Northern Boulevard, Corona

Cost: Free


Queens Family Resource Day

On April 14, the NYC Child Care Resource and Referral Consortium is hosting a Family Resource Day in Queens. There will be reps from summer camps, child care programs, educational resources, and other resources. There will also be workshops and other activities throughout the day.

When: Saturday, April 14 from 11AM to 3PM

Where: Queens Library at Flushing, 41-17 Main Street, Flushing

Cost: Free


Community District Education Council 26 Monthly Meeting:

At this meeting on April 16, several officials from the Department of Education will be present to talk about reforms designed to improve education for students with disabilities throughout the city. Meetings are subject to change so call ahead to 718-631-6927.

When: Monday, April 16 from 7PM to 10PM

Where: MS67, 51-60 Marathon Parkway, Little Neck

Cost: Free

DOE Spring Recess

Public school kids will be on vacation from Friday, April 6 to Friday, April 13. School starts up again on Monday, April 16.

Special Education Reform Sessions:

On April 18, the Education Department’s Division of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners will present sessions about special ed reform. Presenters will describe the process for developing Individualized Education Plans (IEP).

When: Wednesday, April 18 from 9:30AM to 11:30 AM and 6:00PM to 8:00 PM

Where: 28-11 Queens Plaza North, Long Island City

Cost: Free


QSAC Autism Conference:

On April 19, Quality Services for the Autism community (QSAC) will present a conference for parents and families as well as professionals on the topic of autism. Workshops will cover increasing language, sexuality, and navigating insurance.

When: Thursday, April 19 from 8:30AM to 3:30PM

Where: Sheraton LaGuardia, 135-20 39th Avenue, Flushing

Cost: $25 for family members; scholarships are available


NACAC National College Fair:

On April 22, meet reps from hundred of colleges. Parents and students can also participate in workshops about financial aid, admissions, and students with special needs and college.

When: Sunday, April 22 from 11AM to 4PM

Where: Javits Convention Center, Hall 1A, 655 West 34 Street, Manhattan

Cost: Free


Types of Learning Disabilities and Evaluations:

This workshop will go over the different kinds of learning and attention disorders that can affect school-age children, the evaluations that are available, and how to obtain them for your child.  For more information and to register contact Meredith Nabozny at

New York State Exams:

Students in grades three to eight will be participating in English Language Arts tests from April 17 to 19 and Math tests from April 25 to April 27.
