NYC Schools: Important May Dates and Deadlines

The 9th Annual Independent Boarding Schools Fair

This event for junior high school students and their parents will meet representatives from East Coast schools. There will also be workshops about admission and financial aid. To register call 212-677-1108.

When: Thursday, May 3 from 4:30PM to 7PM

Where: Boys Club of NY (, Eldridge T. Gerry, Jr. Clubhouse, 321 East 111 Street

Cost: Free


NYS English as a Second Language Tests:

The speaking portion of this K-12 test will be from April 18 to May 18 and the rest of the test (reading, writing, and listening sections) runs from May 7 to May 18. The specific date for each part of the test is chosen by your child’s school. This exam is designed to measure the level of language proficiency of students who have been identified as having limited English proficiency.


June SAT Registration

Students must register for the June SAT by May 5.


NY League for Early Learning (NYL) LifeStart

Parent Information Night: Gigi’s Playhouse

Helping Parents and School Districts Become More Effective Partners: Special Education Mediation Information Sessions

This session, hosted by the NYS Dispute Resolution Association, Inc, will help parents learn to communicate more effectively. Participants will also meet representatives from organizations that assist parents and schools with communications. Click here to register.

Eagle Week Community/Parent Forum

As part of their Eagle Week, the Eagle Academy Foundation will be offering a free forum about raising and engaging young men. Register here.

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Application Deadline

SYEP provides New York City youth between the ages of 14 and 24 with summer employment. Participants are placed in entry-level jobs at government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, and community based organizations among others. The deadline for the applications is May 18.


Practice Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT)

Middle schoolers interested in taking the SHSAT can take advantage of this opportunity co-sponsored by the Queens Library and Kaplan. Preregistration is required.

When: Tuesday, May 15 from 4PM to 5:30PM

Where: Central Library, 89-11 Merrick Boulevard

Cost: Free


Super Saturday STEM Expo

This fifth annual expo is designed for kids from Pre-K to Grade 12 and their families. It will feature hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities and demonstrations by Harlem public school students and organizations like museums and colleges.

When: Saturday, May 19 from 10AM to 3PM

Where: The Harlem Armory, 40 West 143rd Street

Cost: Free


Reading Exams

These exams are designed for grades 3 to 12 who are receiving bilingual and dual language instruction. The exams for students receiving instruction in Chinese will take place on May 21. The Spanish test will take place on May 22.


NYS Science Performance Test

Students in grades 4 and 8 will sit for this exam that tests their progress towards NYS standards in science from May 23 to June 1. The school chooses the specific date.


College and Career Readiness: What do I need to know to help my child?

This annual event for parents of English Language Learners (ELLs) will offer families information about helping their child become college and career ready as well as information about summer learning opportunities. To register, complete this form and return it to your parent coordinator by Friday, May 4.

When: Friday, May 25 from 9AM to 2PM

Where: The Jacob Javits Center at 11th Avenue between West 34th and 39th Streets

Cost: Free


Memorial Day

Schools will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 28.
