Long Island City’s Food Cellar & Co is not your typical supermarket. While they do carry many items found at most chain supermarkets, what makes them different is their wide selection of gourmet, organic and locally grown or produced foods. Food Cellar even has a large selection of freshly prepared foods that you can purchase to go, or eat in their sit-down café section.
Food Cellar has often been called Queens’ version of Whole Foods, with comparable products and prices. Visitors to the shop can find good variety of organic produce, locally grown or prepared items, as well as more exotic imported foods. Their bakery section has all kinds of cakes and pastries, as well as a variety of breads from local bakeries. You’ll find a full butcher and meat counter, as well as a seafood counter with knowledgeable staff ready to assist you.
Besides all that, you may be surprised to find a great selection of gelato flavors on display and a wood burning pizza oven tucked away in the back corner of the store. You can even purchase artful arrangements of flowers from LIC flower shop FlorEsta.
Like cheese? Then a visit to Food Cellar’s cheese counter is in order. With over 300 varieties, it’s perfect if you’re looking to put together a cheese plate with items you’re not likely to find at most other stores. You’ll find domestic as well as imported cheeses, and all the extras you’ll need for serving.
We picked up just a few of the great things available to serve alongside a cheese platter. A baguette from Balthazar Bakery, Harvest Song Quince Preserves from Armenia, a flourless Fig & Marcona Almond cake from Spain, Tres Petits Cochons Whole Wheat Petits Toasts from France, and some Spanish Savory Olive Oil Tortas made by Ines Rosales.
For the cheeses, we brought home an aged Wisconsin Cheddar, a creamy blue cheese called Bleu D’Auviergne from the South of France, a semi-soft (also French) raw milk cheese called Abbaye Sainte Mere, a 2 year old Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy, and a sharp Spanish Manchego. Add some red grapes and serve it all on a plate or platter.
The products available at Food Cellar are impressive. If you like to go out for tapas, or fancy dinners every now and then, you just might find a trip to Food Cellar can help you recreate the same experience at home. Oh, and you can still pick up a carton of milk or a package of diapers during the same shopping trip. Pretty perfect!
