Not too long ago, the Rockaways were known as the Irish Riviera because of the large population of Irish Americans living on the peninsula. Although the tapestry of the Rockaways has changed over the years, the spirit of the Irish persists, as evidenced in the annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade that attracts crowds numbering over 50,000.
While this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will have marchers navigating a landscape completely transformed by Sandy and favorite gathering spots such as the Harbor Lights Pub, which burned during the storm, will be closed, the parade will go on, and no doubt the grandeur and majesty of the Irish will continue to raise the morale of this community.
When: Saturday, March 2, 2013
Start time: 1 pm at Beach 130 Street & Newport Avenue
