This Summer, ten parks across the five boroughs will be getting some unique and colorful picnic tables that have been created by children from various public schools around the city.. The Parks & Recreation Department partnered with the non-profit organization LeAP, which was oversaw the project. Alexandra Leff, creator and director of the program stated that “The idea behind the program is that kids are part of our communities and experience all of the same things that we do.”
Each table has been worked on by a group of students and each focuses on a single theme, for example, stop the violence or stop the bullying. The students then collaborated with each other to create a work of art that represented the given theme; in addition to coming up with the concept, students were responsible for the construction of the project, which involved mixing cement and laying tiles.
The exhibition will run through August, and yes, people can eat on the tables.
