Queens based company Knitted by ELLA makes beautiful knitted creations for moms, babies and children in Long Island City. Knitted by ELLA started in November of 2012, and is now providing original knitted hair and winter accessories for the LIC community and beyond.
Local Queens Mom, Nurhan Meteoglu Yucelen, first learned how to knit when she was around six or seven years old and grew up in a family of women who knitted and crocheted beautiful practical creations. Her mom taught her how to knit & her first project was knitting a dish cloth and she continued knitting over the years as her passion for it grew. As a stay at home mother of a 3.5 year old girl, Nur picked up her needles again after not knitting for two years and started one night as her daughter slept. At first she was just happy to have an outlet to relax in the evenings while her daughter Ela was fast asleep but it soon grew into something else.
One day Nur said to herself, “Why not share these works with people who love and appreciate handmade items and the work of artisans?” Shortly after, the company named after her daughter Ela, “Knitted by ELLA” was born. Nur now uses wool, cotton and premium acrylic yarn in her artisan works. Most of the yarn comes from her home country of Turkey. She makes knitted hair clips, baby booties, women’s socks, traditional beadedTurkish slippers, and beautiful knitted loop scarf necklaces.
Her inspiration comes from her family since she comes from a long line of knitters and she always shares her new creations with her husband and daughter who give her feedback. Her daughter requested “Hello Kitty” so she created a Hello Kitty Head Warmer which inspired her to make other things like kitty, doggy and car baby booties. Other favorites are the Toddler Bow Scarf perfect for the holidays making the child literally look like a wrapped gift and the Bow Tie Scarf which falls in place on the body like a bow tie. It is easy and quick to put on a child and everyone loves it.
Knitting has changed the way she sees the world. Nur is inspired by nature, color and with so many things she sees in every day life. She looks for color combination ideas in flowers, rocks and in everything around her. Nur loves colors and sometimes she just grabs the color of yarn that calls her attention to start a project and the winter season ensures that she knits warm, cozy and soft pieces.
Nur’s vision for the future is to continue to improve her knitting skills to write her own design pattern and make as many unique items she thinks up. She wishes to promote her business further by opening her own little shop where she can sell knitted designs and baked goods. She would also love to teach knitting workshops.
Nur’s Favorite Local Places to Visit:
As an LIC Mom, her favorite places to visit are the waterfront parks. There is an amazing view of the city at her fingertips, yet quiet places to relax while her daughter plays in state of the art playgrounds or frolics in the grass.
